Fire safety in higher-risk buildings is a measurable problem, not an abstract one. The Fire Door Inspection Scheme found around 75% of fire doors inspected across more than 100,000 checks failed to meet the required standard, barely improved on the 76% recorded the year before. Government figures put between 71,000 and 79,000 residential buildings in England in the 11-to-18-metre band where stricter checks apply.
The building-safety reforms behind these duties trace back to the Grenfell Tower fire of June 2017, in which 72 people died. And the risk is ongoing: Home Office data recorded 254 fire-related deaths in England in the year to December 2024, around 78% of them in the home.
